VIP Reception: 11:00am - 12:00pm
Program: 12:00pm - 1:30pm
Each year, CWLC hosts our Pursuit of Justice Awards luncheon to recognize leaders who have demonstrated extraordinary commitment to the advancement of gender equality. This year, we are proud to honor Dr. Michele Goodwin and Kim Phuc Phan Thi. We hope you will join us in recognizing these phenomenal leaders who are working to end violence, advance equitable access to women’s healthcare, and secure safety and opportunity for women and girls around the world.
Dr. Michele Bratcher Goodwin is an internationally renowned legal scholar, Executive Producer of Ms. Studios, and award-winning author, whose most recent book, Policing The Womb: Invisible Women and the Criminalization of Motherhood and commentary have been featured by the Washington Post, New York Times, Boston Review, CNN, The Atlantic, NPR, and the Nation among other media. She is a frequent commentator on MSNBC and host of the popular podcast On The Issues With Michele Goodwin at Ms. magazine. Dr. Goodwin is a Chancellor's Professor at the University of California, Irvine and chairs the Foundation Board of the ACLU of Southern California.
Kim Phuc Phan Thi is a peace activist, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, and founder of the KIM Foundation International. She is most widely known as the “Napalm Girl” who became an international symbol of the atrocities of war and the need to prevent conflict around the globe. A Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph published by the AP in 1972, “The Terror of War,” captured a naked 9-year-old Kim running down a street outside of her Vietnamese village to flee the napalm attacks that had engulfed
her community. The photo elicited a global response which forced the public to contend with the unspeakable toll of war. Devoting her life to advocacy and peace activism, she created the KIM Foundation International to provide aid to children affected by war. The Foundation has undertaken a number of projects to assist children including helping plan and construct a library in Kim’s name in Vietnam, an orphanage in India, and medical care facilities in Uganda and Kenya, among many other impactful efforts.
For more than 30 years, CWLC has worked to protect, secure, and advance the comprehensive civil rights of women and girls. We have advocated for and achieved
policy change on a wide range of issues including gender equality, Title IX enforcement, women’s health and reproductive justice, economic security, and violence
against women.
We applaud these champions for creating a more equitable and just world and are pleased to acknowledge and recognize their outstanding achievements with CWLC's 2023 Pursuit of Justice Award. Thank you for joining us in recognizing their leadership, and in supporting CWLC's mission pursuing justice for
women and girls.
